Don’t be afraid of turning 50: LIVE IT UP
Happy Birthday to Mary J. Blige today!
What is it about turning a year older… especially at a milestone birthday… that makes us all feel a little shy?
It’s true. We don’t want to admit our age. We want to be younger, look more refreshed, feel like we were 25 again.
Maybe it’s time to switch that up.
Mary J. Blige, known as the QUEEN OF HIP HOP SOUL, turns 50 today. Sure, I can remember her cover version of “Real Love,” or her cover of “Sweet Thing” by Rufus and Chaka Khan; her huge hit “Family Affair” that was a dance floor anthem in college, and many songs in between.
But, for me, it’s THIS song that means something: NO MORE DRAMA.
Sampling the theme from the CBS soap opera “The Young And The Restless,” Mary J. lets it all hang out. From self-doubt, to issues in relationships, challenges with abuse and dependency, Mary J. realized just after age 30 in this semi-autobiographical song that she was going to take no prisoners.
AND THAT…. THAT is EMPOWERING.
Happy 50th, Mary J. Blige. Thank YOU for giving us a song that allows us, at any age, milestone birthday or not, to ban the drama and toxicity from our lives. Here’s to many more years of your success… and NO MORE DRAMA from here forward.
